Features
  • Math Kangaroo Competition is an international, once a year event, always on the third Thursday in March.
  • Any student in grades 1 through 12 qualifies if he or she can work independently: read and answer a multiple choice test.
  • Each student receives a t-shirt, a certificate of participation, and a gift in addition to a competition booklet and a pencil on the test day.
  • Pictures are taken and placed on our web pages and in other media.
  • The competition questions are appropriate for the students' age, are interesting and challenging.
  • Questions are chosen by the International Math Kangaroo Committee.
  • In May students who earned top scores at each level of participation are awarded with gold, silver, bronze medals and with gifts. The gold medal is the highest prize. Medals are accompanied with gifts. International Summer Camp in Europe, and college grants are among the prizes. Also, in each participating state 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the state are recognized at each level.

General Rules
  • Levels correspond with school grades:
    • 1st Grade -- Level 1
    • 2st Grade -- Level 2
    • 3st Grade -- Level 3
    • .....
    • 12th Grade (Senior Class in High School) -- Level 12
  • 75 Minutes multiple choice test
  • 24 Questions for students in grades 1, 2, 3 and 4
  • 30 Questions for students in grades 5 and up
  • Each participant receives a competition booklet, an answer form, scratch paper and pencil.
  • Here is an example of Math Kangaroo Answer Card.
  • No aids other than writing instruments and paper will be allowed. In particular, no calculators will be allowed on any part of the competition, and any cell phones must be turned off

Scoring
  • Each question has point value. 1/3 of questions are 3 points each, 1/3 - 4 points each, 1/3 - 5 points each. The sum of earned points is the student's result.
  • The result in Math Kangaroo is called the score. The score is the sum of points earned by a student in the competition. We use Scantron hardware, Scantron software, and Scantron answer cards to process the answers and obtain the results - these tools have never failed. Each question has its point value displayed on the questions paper. A student earns the points when he/she marks answers properly. At this time we do not subtract points for wrong answers. That may change in future.
  • The students who earned the ten top highest scores are placed on National List on places 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 - at each level nationwide.
  • The maximum possible score is 96 points at levels: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 120 points at levels 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
  • If several students' score is 100% or 96 points at level 4, for example, they all are at place 1 and all receive gold medals. If the greatest number of points is not 100% at some level of participation, that number qualifies for first place, at this time. That may change and no first place may be awarded. The second highest score puts a student in second place, and so on.
  • Percentile is the percentage of students whose scores are lower than your child's score at that level of participation. We provide two numbers: in state and nationwide. Please note that only Math Kangaroo participants are considered and our group is not that large. Your child's percentile in another test or another group maybe different.
  • We present percentile for parent to see where their children place in the Math Kangaroo competition.

Awards
  • Gold medals are awarded for the first place at each level nationwide. Silver medals are awarded for the second place at each level nationwide. Bronze medals are awarded for the third place at each level nationwide.
  • In states we recognize the students who earned the three top scores at each level, at this time. When in each participating state the number of participants is 100 or more at each level of participation we plan to recognize ten top results in each state as well. We need to wait awhile for that.
  • Blue Ribbon is awarded for the first place in state. Red Ribbon is awarded for the second place in state. White Ribbon is awarded for the third place in state. All these ribbons are beautiful!
  • In addition to the medals and ribbons, the national winners and the state winners are awarded with Certificates of Excellence and gifts which include: books, games, gift cards, toys, college grants and mathematical summer camps.
  • Priority with receiving grants and camps have the students who participated in Math Kangaroo for several years with top scores. The Math Kangaroo reserves the right to make exception to that rule if academic exception is demonstrated and funds are available.
